“The Holy Love or lack of Holy Love in each heart at the moment of judgment determines the soul’s eternity.”

What is Holy Love Ministries?
As taken from their Overview page on the holylove.org website: “Holy Love Ministries is an ecumenical lay apostolate committed to living and propagating the Holy Love, Divine Love and United Hearts messages. These messages which support the two great commandments–love God above all else and love your neighbor as yourself–are given by means of private revelation to Heaven’s messenger. HLM Servants of Holy Love gather to pray the rosary for world peace, for an end to abortion, and that hearts open to Heaven’s messages.” The following video of around 5 minutes also gives a good summary of the Shrine and property in Elyria, OH:

Don’t private revelations need a “Nihil Obstat” or “Imprimatur” from the local Bishop?
Cannon Law currently says that new revelations, apparitions, miracles, etc do not need Church approval to be read circulated, as long as they do not go against faith and morals. So no imprimatur needed (see Discernment of Visionaries and Apparitions Today by Albert J. Hebert, SM). Canon Law also states that Catholics have the prerogative to believe in private revelation and if they turn out to be false, they will still receive the graces as if it were real!
Do any of the Holy Love Ministries Messages contradict faith and morals?
No. Multiple priests, bishops, and even the former Archbishop of Nigeria have expressed letters of endorsement for the Messages as not being against, and actually very in line with faith and morals of the Catholic Faith (See http://www.holylove.org/endorsements.php). In other words, had these apparitions occurred in another part of the world, they may well of had ecclesial approval for years, even decades now. In fact, the messages themselves often express the importance in remaining faithful to the Church’s Magisterium and Tradition, especially amidst these trying times of so much rejection, ignorance and compromise of Church Teaching.
So, what about that letter from the former Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese?
As Wayne Weible, the late Catholic journalist widely known for his books on the Medjugorje apparitions, stated in his 2015 book, Intimate messages from Heaven:
“To put it bluntly: Holy Love Ministries has never been condemned by the Catholic Church. It also has never been condemned by the Cleveland Diocese. However, in November 2009, the bishop of the Cleveland Diocese issued a formal “admonition” for Catholics advising them to stay away from Holy Love. The fact is, it is an invalid action since the Diocese has no jurisdiction over an ecumenical entity. Further, the decree of admonishment was reportedly issued based on an investigation conducted by the Diocese by a person or persons unidentified. When Don and Maureen asked the Diocese for a copy of the investigation and who conducted in they were told the information was “confidential.” In order to be objective in Writing the story of Holy Love, I contacted the Diocese via email in November 2015, informing them that I was writing a book on the Ministry and wanted to give the Diocese an opportunity to explain the business of the admonition, the claim of an investigation of Holy Love and a list of other related questions. I was told at that time that a response would be forthcoming to my questions. Two weeks later, after several emails inquiring when I might receive answers to my questions, I received a short note with consider an attachment of the same decree that had been issued in November.”
Is the Bishop’s “Admonition” the same thing as a formal “Condemnation”?
No. Recall the 8 demands or prohibitions that Bishop Zanic wrote of Medjugorje, who formally believed in the apparitions until pressure to demote him from Bishop to Parish Priest came from the Communists. This list stated that the visionaries were to make no further public appearances, have no apparitions in the church, and that practices and devotions related to Medjugorje were to stop (he even demanded the visionaries give him knowledge of the secrets!)… Unless the Church officially releases a formal condemnation of the private apparition or revelation after thorough investigation, there is no reason to abandon belief of their legitimacy and devotion to their spirituality.
As it stands, Holy Love Ministries has every right to operate locally under the following 2 Cannons:
Canon 215 – The Christian faithful are at liberty freely to found and direct associations for purposes of charity or piety or for the promotion of the Christian vocation in the world and to hold meetings for the common pursuit of these purposes.
Canon 216 gives us the right to promote or sustain apostolic action “…all the Christian faithful have the right to promote or sustain apostolic action even by their own undertakings, according to their own state and condition.”
Shouldn’t we wait for a Bishop’s or Vatican’s “approval” before reading the messages?
To wait until an apparition is approved would be to miss out on many graces for healing and conversion. Medjugorje’s own Father Leon, OP, has often spoken about this effect:
“Lourdes took 4 years to be approved, Fatima took 13 years to be approved. When they were approved, the Bishops said that one of the reasons that they were approved was the continual numbers of people coming there while it was still not approved. So that’s one of the signs the Church looks for. So to say you can’t go to somewhere unapproved is not true.”
What is the current stance of the Diocese of Cleveland, under the newly appointed Bishop?
As far as I’ve been told the Diosece of Cleveland, when asked by pilgrims about Holy Love, has had a “see for yourself” mentality…which may indicate a shift in the right direction for approval!
What does Scripture/Tradition say?
Acts 5:38-39: “So now I tell you, have nothing to do with these men, and let them go. For if this endeavor or this activity is of human origin, it will destroy itself. But if it comes from God, you will not be able to destroy them; you may even find yourselves fighting against God.”
“It is better to believe than not to believe, for, if you believe, and it is proven true, you will be happy that you have believed, because Our Holy Mother asked it. If you believe, and it should be proven false, you will receive all blessings as if it had been true, because you believed it to be true.” — His Holiness, Urban VIII (Pope, 1623-44)
“This too must be listed among the rights of a human being, to honor God according to the sincere dictates of his own conscience, and therefore the right to practice his religion privately and publicly.” — His Holiness, John XXIII, Pacem in Terris, April 11, 1963.
“Private revelation is a help to this faith, and shows its credibility precisely by leading me back to the definitive public Revelation.” — Pope Benedict XVI
